About the Chapter
History of SCALA
The best
that we can recollect, the idea of the South Carolina
Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators was
conceived by two individuals while attending an educational
conference at the Doral Country Club in Miami Beach in
1980. Those attendees were Bruce Beatty and Randy Hayslett.
At that time, only 5 members were needed to start a chapter,
and thus, SCALA was born consisting of members from
Greenville, Columbia, and Charleston.
In 1980, the
first President of SCALA was Bruce Beatty. Apparently, he
did a GREAT job because he was president for 2 years. Rumor
is that Bruce missed a few meetings, thus got nominated and
elected. The moral of the story: Do not miss these
meetings.
The current
membership of 59 is extremely thankful to these fellows for
an idea that has grown and developed into a first class
organization. With educational meetings covering topics
such as Financial Management, Human Resources, Facilities
Maintenance, Information Technology, Marketing, as well as
Law Firm Trends, this organization is the best source of
knowledge for Legal Administrators in the state of South
Carolina.
Take a
moment and review the
upcoming events, as well as
membership
information on this website. SCALA would love to have
you as our guest at an upcoming meeting. Just contact one
of our current officers.
And, one
final note: A great BIG “Thank You” to the first 5 members
of SCALA, but especially to Bruce Beatty and Randy Hayslett.
Without the Miami Educational Conference in 1980, we could
not say that we’ve been around for almost 25 years.
